Uptown New Orleans played host to the 100th anniversary of the Prytania Theatre on Jan. 15. The Prytania Theatre, located at 5339 Prytania Street, is the oldest operating movie theatre in New Orleans, opening its doors in 1914, and the only operating single-screen movie theatre in the state. The anniversary was special for many people but particularly for those who have been going to the theatre since the beginning.
“I’ve been coming here for 70 years or so. My mother used to carry me” said Georgie Smith, a native of New Orleans.
The anniversary was celebrated with a free movies all day, starting at 10 a.m. with “Gone with the Wind”, and continued to a block party ending at 10 p.m. The block party included free popcorn and movie memorabilia, roman candy, and live music.
The anniversary sparked respect in all attendees.
“The Prytania, what I do love about New Orleans is that it does have so many neighborhood gems and this is one so all respect to it” said Josie Donnelly Smierciak, a party attendee.
Not only movie goers but workers were also happy about the milestone.
“Prytannia is such a beautiful place and it’s such a little gem right uptown. I really love it” said Prytannia employee Franchesca Peterson said.
Overall, everyone was happy to see the Prytania turn 100.
“I love it. I’m glad that I made it” said Smith.
